Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #50

I realized I haven't blogged about this video!  This was #50 in this addition process!  50 videos!

In this VLOG we got carpet installed.  I spent the time soldering a new motor controller board for my CNC machine.  The kids loved playing on the pad!

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #49

The siding guy finally finished!  He's the one contractor who we never caught his name.  He was very quite and very slow (in my mind).

We spent the night getting the floors ready for carpet.  I installed a few more rows of laminate flooring. Brittney shakes it for the camera!  She's so much fun!

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #48

I realized I never blogged this on when I published it.  More siding got done.  Mason talks to the camera and lets me know that Shadow caught a mouse!

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #47

Nov, 21st we installed the chair rail in Mason's room.  They are getting ready to paint his ceiling and we needed the chair rail primed.

The floor didn't get grounded down due to our general telling us that he rented a grinding machine and he would come do it on Monday.

Kind of a lame video this week.

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #46

This is November 20, 2015.

Another day!  Let's get on with this.  We have enjoyed the process of the painting because we wouldn't have done it this way.  It's interesting to watch things happen and hope that they have the same outcome even though you would have done it differently.

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #44

Today I took down the back deck that didn't go anywhere.

I figured I would rather tear it down then let the general.  No point in paying him for that, and I wanted to save the wood for some other projects I have in mind.

The siding guy showed up today and he looks like he takes his sweet time getting things done!

Enjoy!

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #43

This is actually two days of work.  November 16th and 17th.  We took down the plastic so they can touch up the ceiling and get it ready for paint.

The trim work guys were amazing!  There were 7 of them and they had 4 miter saws setup out front.  They installed all of the trim in just 2 hours for the entire addition. I came home and was just amazed that they finished.

Hope you enjoy.

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #42

I talk a little about the brick and grout as well as the stucco.

They plastered the ceiling and I wanted to get some really closeup video of the process.

Wednesday, November 11, 2015

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #41

They actually came out and "started" laying the shingles.  I say "started" because apparently they didn't bring enough shingles.  They have been working away on the inside getting the sheet rock mudded and taped.

The general has some really weird things that he is doing.  I'm not sure why he chooses to do certain things.  He's obviously too busy and I'm not one to keep hounding someone to do the work they have promised to do.

Brittney and I know how construction works.  We are capable of doing this work ourselves.  So it makes it hard to sit around and wait for somebody to do the work.  Especially, when he doesn't do he work when it needs to be done.

Monday, November 9, 2015

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #40

We were told again that the siding and shingles would be installed today.

I set the cameras up to record the action!  Little action was found.

We did however get the basement window put in!  That had been a long time coming.

Thanks for following along.

Friday, November 6, 2015

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #39

Today was supposed to be siding and shingles.  That didn't happen, as usual.  I get really tired of a general contractor who just tells you what he thinks you "want" to hear!

I'm just glad that some progress happened!

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #38

Today I set up the camera after talking with the brick mason for about 20 minutes.

We talked about his company, how long he's been a mason, I asked if he knew my old back door neighbor growing up (Gene Tidwell).

Because of my experience with the sheet rock guy the other day, I specifically asked him about doing he time-lapse video.  He said that it wouldn't be a problem.  Then I leave to work and he walks over and turns the camera off!  ARGH!!! SO FRUSTRATING!  Why not just tell me that you don't want it to record you!

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #37

This was November 3, 2015.  This is the second day of this crew hanging sheet rock. Some people don't want to be videoed!  I understand his feelings but, I wish he would understand what I'm trying to do with the videos.

Brittney helps out with the VLOG today and takes you on a tour of the inside.

Ali, Kacy, and Shadow make their appearances today as well.

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #36

Today another crew showed up to do the sheet rock.  They were both nice guys.  One of them obviously didn't like being involved in a time lapse video!

They did a really good job of matching everything up and making it look good.

Friday, October 30, 2015

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #35

Today they prepared for sheet rock.

Because the trusses were wrong they had to shim them down.  They also had to re-locate the electrical line that was in the existing wall.

At the start of the video I had mentioned how I would have ran the wire.  At the end of the day I was upset when I came home to find what I did!

How is it that the general contractor doesn't check these things to make sure everything works.  Why should I be the one to have to find these things and get them done right?  Didn't I hire you to do this?

What am I paying you for?

Thursday, October 29, 2015

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #34

This was a pretty good day.  They hung the sheetrock in the basement, office and loft.  They also took down the kitchen wall.

There is a pretty funny part in this video which I'm still not sure how somebody does it!

Wednesday, October 28, 2015

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #33

The work that happened today wasn't caught on camera due to not knowing what was going to happen.

As you can see in the thumbnail, I let the kids color on the wall before the tore it down!  They had a fun time doing things that they know they aren't supposed to do.

Tuesday, October 27, 2015

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #32

This was October 26, 2015.  It took some time to get the cameras setup to video this.  I'm happy with the shots.  They blew in the insulation because they don't have access to blow this in after the sheetrock gets installed.

We got Aaron on video telling us he would be cutting in Mason's window for his bedroom tomorrow. That would be October 27th.  Needless to say even on November 4th we still don't have the window cut in.

This is really frustrating because we are paying him to do the work and it's not happening.  It's frustrating because I know that I can do the work myself.  But I'm paying him to do the work!

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #30

Let me apologize for how lame this video is.

I wanted to document a few things and talk about the progress.

Friday, October 23, 2015

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #29

Today they came to finish up some of the electrical wiring.  They touched up the HVAC.

Then they delivered the sheetrock.

Funny story about the sheetrock is that one of the guys that was bringing in some tripped and fell.  The sheetrock hit the wall.  Brittney said, "Watch out for that first step, it's a doosie!"  The other guys couldn't stop saying that the whole time they were there delivering.

Thursday, October 22, 2015

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #28

They started running electrical lines today.  They didn't finish but, neither did the video.  They turned the breaker off that the camera was plugged into.

Oh well, so it goes.

Wednesday, October 21, 2015

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #27

Today Questar Gas came and moved our gas meter from the front of the house to the side of the addition.

It was worth the money to have it moved.

I also purchased a wide angle lens for the camera for better viewing.

Check out Brittney making fun of me!  Luckily she mentioned that she did something in one of them so, I was on the lookout for it!

Thanks for watching.

Saturday, October 17, 2015

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #26

October 17th was tar paper and no shingles due to the cold weather and the shingles being "too" stuck together.

I think it was a cop-out to be able to postpone for another day.

It has rained and it did stay dry!  We are happy about that.

Friday, October 16, 2015

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #25

We have a roof... well the sheeting is installed!

I didn't talk in this one...  I think more people might watch this one.

Thursday, October 15, 2015

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #24

Simple day of installing the front windows and fixing the trusses.

Some progress everyday is a good thing!

Wednesday, October 14, 2015

Monday, October 12, 2015

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #22

Today they installed the trusses.  Just before the crane arrived, our framer Chuck, sprained his ankle!  He did a pretty good number on it and should probably be off of it for a week.

Knowing Chuck he will probably be back soon to finish up!

Enjoy!

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #21

Today October 9, 2015 was NOT a good day!

I hadn't planned on anybody showing up to do work today.  I was planning on working out in my shop getting my CNC machine working again so I could present again at the Salt Lake Mini Maker Faire.

Needless to say, my machine is still not working and I'm not going to present.

I'm sorry for the lack of interesting stuff in this video but, some days you step in it, some days are it!

Thursday, October 8, 2015

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #20

Not much happened on October 8, 2015.

They just did some prep work and clean-up for our HVAC work.

Wednesday, October 7, 2015

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #19

Monday we brought our newest addition to our family!  Today, Wednesday we brought her home!

This is some pretty interesting times here at our house.  So much is going on and we are trying to keep it calm and collected among all the chaos!

Wednesday, September 30, 2015

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #17

Well so much for videoing the progress.  They built a wall first thing and blocked the rest of the progress.  Some people just don't like being videoed.

These framers are great guys!  They are very thorough and clean.  Guess that's what happens when you have been doing it for more than 30+ years.

Please enjoy the latest video.  Not much work shown.

Tuesday, September 29, 2015

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #16

Tuesday was another day of framing! They are making some good progress.

They came and delivered a Porta Potty (Honey Bucket) for the workers which really helps.

These guys are very good at keeping the mess to a minimum.  They also are very good at getting this the floor joists and walls all lined up with he existing house.

Enjoy some comedic relief at the end.

Monday, September 28, 2015

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #15

It's been a while since we have had any progress on the addition.  This was Monday September 28, 2015 and we have the downstairs exterior walls up.

The framers are great guys and fun to talk to.  They are very conscious of keeping it clean knowing that our kids are going to be running around.  (Thanks Chuck!)

Wednesday, September 16, 2015

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #14

September 15th & 16th were both really "fun" days!

I called our contractor on Monday and asked him about getting a tarp put up for the storm that was forecast.

He said that it shouldn't be a problem.  Then he called me back and informed me that he needed to go to Moab as his son was going to be getting out of surgery by the time he got down there.

So now, not only is he telling me that he isn't worried about the water, but that he's not even going to be around!

Well the rain came!  And it came down!  I ended up taking the day off work and getting the tarps/billboard covering up the basement only after 1/2" of water had entered the basement.

The contractor's son had a gall stone blockage and had become septic so I can't feel too bad about him not being around.  I just wish that he would have taken the precaution when I first called him.

So it goes!  Please enjoy the video.

Saturday, September 12, 2015

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #13

We have a place for the kids to ride their scooters and play.  This is while construction waits on the framers.

This isn't a construction video but is more an insight into our daily adventures.

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #10

Sept. 8th, 2015 was cutting out the existing foundation wall and hauling it off.

Labor Day was spent re-routing the sprinkler lines and testing them.

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #9

Another day another video that's 6 days late!  Trying to get these edited and posted on a daily basis isn't easy with 3 kids and everything else going on.

Enjoy!

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #8

Our kids love watching these guys work!  I'm not going to lie, I do to!  This is pretty fun for us to be able to look back on our addition.

Thursday, September 3, 2015

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #7

Today we got the footings of our addition!  I look like such a dork in these videos!  I'm sorry if you guys are actually watching these things.  Maybe I'll stop being in them and just let the construction guys do all the work!

Wednesday, September 2, 2015

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #6

This vlogging is not easy!  I need more hours in the day so I can get these done in a timely manor!

This was a dirt removal day and pouring of the footings.

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #4

Well, today was a busy night!  I knew that I had to get everything finished with moving the gate and fence slats.  We met with Aaron and the contractor doing the excavation work.  This fence moving took some time to get it removed. (Especially with kids!)

Please feel free to watch as we get ready to take on this adventure of adding on to our home!

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #3

Saturday we moved our playset from the side of our yard into the back.

We like having a place outside where our kids can go play.

This is a timelapse of me moving the playset.

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #2

We wanted to do a walk around the outside to show you what it looks like before we start.

This is kind of a long video but there are some funny parts in it!

Please subscribe to the YouTube channel to be kept up to date.

Here's episode #2

Schaefermeyer Home Addition Vlog #1

We are doing an addition to our house! Brittney and I have been married for 11 years. We built our house 10 years ago thinking that we were only going to live here for maybe 5-10 years. That obviously didn't happen. We currently have 3 kids ages (6, 4, 2) with our 4th due October 10th which will happen right during this addition to our house!

I've wanted to start a vlog and figured that this would be a good opportunity and also show off the addition process.

As we go about this addition we will try to keep people up to date on what is happening. I know this isn't the most exciting stuff in the world but, it's exciting for us! (And maybe you might learn something if you are thinking about adding on to your home.)

Here are some of the plans that we are looking to do.  This will give you some information about what we are talking about in the videos.

Please feel free to comment or ask questions. The best way to keep up to date will probably be through the YouTube videos. Please Subscribe to be kept up on the process.

Now let the videos begin!

Camping Chair Bag

We have camping chairs for our kids and one of them ripped a hole in the bottom of the bag.

In order to come up with a replacement, I thought of the idea to use a pair of cargo pants that don't fit anymore!

Enjoy the video and see that my kids love to dress up and want to make videos.

Happy Father's Day - Harley Ride With Kids

We purchased these Powerwheels off of our local classifieds for $20 or less each.  They had bad batteries.  Knowing what I know about batteries I never purchased replacement batteries from Powerwheels ($65+ each).  I modify the toys to run off of normal connectors so I can hook them up to regular SLA batteries ($25 each).

I also modified the red Harley from using two 6 volt batteries to use a 12 volt battery like the others.

As you will see in the video; We ride them as well!  The neighbors laugh at us, I think they are just jealous!

More Maker Faire Fun!

Just one more thing that came out just today about Maker Faire!

You can literally meet the most awesome people!

Thanks Peter!

Maker Faire 2015 -- And why you should go!!!

I was introduced to Make: about 8 years ago from a former boss (Chad Maughan).  From that point on I was hooked!  There was finally a bunch of people and a magazine to go along with my thoughts and passions to not only find out how things work, but how to build and make anything.  I started my subscription to the magazine.

My co-worker was able to attend the annual Maker Faire in San Mateo, CA. and when he would come back he would always tell me how awesome it was.  I would sit in awe and be jealous as he would talk about it and show me pictures.

It was through Make: that I first learned about a Kickstarter campaign started by Edward Ford for his ShapeOko CNC.  We had just had our 2nd child and figured there would be no way to contribute to his campaign.  Later that year after Inventables was fulfilling the orders I had asked my parents to take the money they would use on my birthday and Christmas presents and help put it towards a ShapeOko CNC.

Fast forward a few years and Salt Lake City would have a Mini Maker Faire.  I told my wife that we were going as a family no mater what!  We attended and it was pretty cool!  I knew that it was nothing in comparison to the main Maker Faire.

I still hadn't been able to attend the main Maker Faire due to having new born kids and work. The next time that Salt Lake had their 2nd Mini Maker Faire, I decided that I wanted to present my ShapeOko CNC.  I had been researching to find something that was fun to help interact with the kids at the faire. While I was trying to come up with an idea, Bob Clagett with I Like To Make Stuff posted a blog post on his site of a recap that he did for his booth at the Atlanta Maker Faire.

I had to contact him and ask him about his experience about presenting at the faire.  He gave me a great idea to cut small pieces of wood (4"x4") coasters and then engrave on them.  I used some melamine and a v-bit and it was awesome!  I couldn't thank Bob enough.

Fast forward a few months, Bob Clagett had befriended David Picciuto and Jimmy DiResta and they started a podcast called MakingItPodcast.  I had been watching all of their videos for a long time.
They mentioned that they were going to be going to the Maker Faire 2015.  A week before the Faire Steve Ramsey said he was going to be going to the faire as well.

I just kept thinking about how awesome it would be to go this year!  I had mentioned to my wife Brittney that I would love to go.  Her being the EXTREMELY supportive wife that she is, said, "Just go then!"  So, the Friday before Maker Faire another co-worker of mine Tim Jacobsen and I booked our flights and a hotel.  We would fly out Saturday morning, attend the faire straight from the airport, spend the night, go to the faire again on Sunday then fly back home Sunday night.

Because of owning a ShapeOko from Inventables and other purchases Inventables had sent out a VIP event for an after the Faire party.  As soon as we had booked our flights I RSVP'd for the dinner party.

As we fly out and get there, it was incredible the number of people in attendance.  We entered the faire and we were able to get through the gates about 20 minutes before anybody else was allowed to get in!  We walked around the faire looking at the booths and checking out some really interesting things.  As we then started walking around we ran into Jimmy DiResta just standing there with his Aluminum Axe!

Jimmy DiResta (with Aluminum Axe)

Me, Jimmy DiResta and The Aluminum Axe

We sat and chatted with him for a few minutes.  It was such an amazing experience to meet such an inspirational MAKER!  (If you haven't seen his videos please check them out... and subscribe to his channel!) While sitting there talking to him, it was personally incredible to see how down to earth he is!

He told us that Bob and David were both there as well.  He said that the three of them were doing a talk together and we should come see them.  We ensured him that we would be there!

We left there completely shocked at how cool Jimmy is!  We proceeded to wander through the faire and came across another great Maker Matt Richardson that has some really cool projects/books and great at being influential to many people.

Matt Richardson and I

As we kept walking around looking at all of the other crazy cool projects, we were walking through the crowd and Tim was walking in front of me and as I looked around I saw David Picciuto walk right past us.  It was a good thing that David's wife Kelly saw the expression on my face as I was trying to process the fact that I recognized David walking past.  She stopped him and I yelled at Tim to get him to turn around.  I made sure that Kelly was in the picture with us!  They were so cool!

Kelly, David Picciuto and I

Then it was on to more walking around the faire.  We had lunch and then were walking around and we saw Jimmy standing talking to some people, David and Kelly were sitting on the grass and that's when I realized that Bob was sitting there as well.  We stopped by and chatted with them and took a picture!

Bob Clagett and I

While Tim was taking the picture of Bob and I, Jimmy tells Tim to get in the picture and he proceeds to take the picture of us.

Tim Jacobsen, Bob Clagett and I

After talking with Bob for a minute he then turns and introduces us to another amazing woodworking YouTube artist Kyle Toth!  Here is a panoramic picture of them all.
Jimmy DiResta, Kelly, David Picciuto, Kyle Toth, Bob Clagett

You would think that was a good day... but this is only just after noon!

We walked through a lot more of the faire.  There was literally so many things to see!
I told Tim that I would like to go meet Edward Ford, so we checked out the map and found out where Carbide3d booth was located.  We made our way over there and found the booth.  It was packed with people and Edward was really busy.  I just stood there and waited for him. I introduced myself to him and he says, "Ah yeah, your active on Google Plus!"  Why yes... That took me by surprise that he recognized my name.  We sat and chatted about everything and I showed him some pictures of my Original ShapeOko that is still running.  He grabbed some of the new extruded aluminum to show off, and boy is it impressive!
Edward Ford and I

As Edward and I were standing there talking I noticed somebody else that I recognized walking by.  At first I couldn't come up with his first name!  I was like "Ahhhh...Ummm... Brown.... Peter Brown!"  Peter Brown is another YouTube woodworker.  I got his attention and he came over and we started talking!

Peter Brown and I

At this point I was just in shock and awe at how many awesome people I had met in just half a day at Maker Faire!  Let alone all of the crazy cool awesome strange inspiring random things that there are to see at the Maker Faire.

As it got closer to the 4:00 schedule when Jimmy, Bob and David were going to do their presentation on Epic Failures, we made our way to the building/stage so we could get a seat and listen to them.
As we were standing there waiting for the previous presentation to end, Zach Kaplan the CEO of Inventables walks by and I introduce myself to him!  We sat there and talked about the different things that they are working on and I expressed my impressions of them sending out the ShapeOko2 to a bunch of the YouTube woodworkers.  Zach gave us a card and told us about the dinner party and invited us.

Me and Zach Kaplan

We sat and listened to their presentation and it was fabulous. Afterwards was a meeting with them outside where we stayed and chatted with all of them as well as Peter Brown.

Later that night we went over to the VIP Pizza Party and it was awesome to meet some incredible people with some crazy skills at our table

Bob Clagett, David Picciuto, Jimmy DiResta.
(Not pictured Peter Brown)

And that was our Saturday!  One day down and that would have been enough for me!

We head back on Sunday to the faire and it's about twice as packed as Saturday was.
While we walked around we were able to see Sylvia Todd from here SuperAwesomeSylvia Show.  I have watched her grow up over the years of her putting out videos and being featured in Make:.  I have loved her videos because of her way of explaining science and helping come up with ideas!

Me and Sylvia Todd

Right after meeting Sylvia and walking around the steam punk area of the faire we happened to run into Dale Dougherty!  Dale is the reason for this Maker Faire and all that it has become over the last 10+ years!  I thanked him for putting it on and for "Making" this a reality!

Me and Dale Dougherty

Lastly the only person we hadn't seen would be the most recognizable woodworker on YouTube!  We were so tired from walking around the faire for two days that we were actually sitting down talking with Bob, Jimmy and his girlfriend Tylor Forrest.  While we were sitting there talking I noticed Steve Ramsey and his son Wyatt walking behind us over at the Sketchup dome.  We went over and said "Hi".  All of these people that we met were so down to Earth!  They were all so happy and excited to meet and talk to anybody!  It was really quite surreal how humble they all are!

Wyatt, Steve Ramsey and I

Then the Friday after we got home from Maker Faire this happened!  Steve Ramsey released his latest project video with some of the footage we helped out with!  (I call this my first Commercial Appearance)

And this is Maker Faire!  What an incredible experience to enjoy!  And I'm overly grateful for Brittney and all that she helps me do!

New Shop

I've been making things for quite some time and figure that I would open my services up to everybody. Have a look around at some of the things I have made. These are mostly for your reference to things that I can do for you.
